HEAT STRESS IS A HAZARD
There are currently no regulations in Australia that set a limit on temperature in a work environment.
However it is the employers responsibility to identify hazards and put in control measures to reduce the risk to the hazard, if needed.
Worksafe Australia identifies extreme temperatures as an example of a common workplace hazard (Worksafe Australia, Code of Practice "How to manage work health and safety risks" December 2011").

So many factors to consider
Heat stress is a complex phenomenon that is a combination of meteorological conditions, an individual’s biology, physical exertion, clothing, and even hidden factors, such as work site culture. Consequently, predicting the likelihood of heat stress has been an almost impossible task until now.
According to the latest guidelines on heat stress management, published by the Australian Institute of Occupational Hygienists (AIOH), regular monitoring of heat stress affected jobs is one of your best defences against adverse conditions.
However, management of heat stress is hard. Manually monitoring hundreds of workers on a site on an hour-by-hour basis can be an almost impossible task. Even if monitoring identifies heat stress hazards, there may be little lead time to control them.

What is Heat Manager?
Heat Manager is an expert system designed specifically to manage heat stress hazards on Australian worksites.
Heat Manager helps you identify who is at risk, determine what controls will reduce the risk of a heat related illness and once set up, will automatically alert you to any high risk events up to 7 days in advance.
The Heat Manager system draws on the expert knowledge contained in the Australian Institute of Occupational Hygienists' (AIOH), 'Guide to Managing Heat Stress' and delivers this in an easy to use and accessible format for Australian site managers.
On set-up, Heat Manager walks you through the five steps of developing a robust and workable heat management plan (see image to the right).
How does Heat Manager work?
By reviewing decades of climate data for your site (using Katestone's Numerical Weather System), and profiling individual job conditions, Heat Manager is able to build a baseline Risk Profile for your site, on a job-by-job basis.
This allows Heat Manager to estimate lost work hours due to heat stress, for each worker on each job.
Dynamic Risk Assessments
At the beginning of summer, after your site’s jobs have been profiled, Heat Manager can dynamically generate Risk Assessments for every shift for that job throughout the year.
By examining your site's weather forecast data and conducting a new Risk Assessment daily for every job being monitored by the system, Heat Manager can provide you with lead times of up to 7 days for identified hazards.
Heat Manager does this autonomously, running Risk Assessments in the background to determine your daily status, and only alerting your nominated users when corrective action is required.
Heat Manager has comprehensive configuration options - only the people who need to know receive alerts. HeatX Alerts are delivered via email or SMS and contain advice on what actions are required and when.
Heat Safe Plans
For each Risk Assessment, Heat Manager allows you to customise a Heat Safe Plan, that provides site managers with all the control measures needed to reduce the risk of heat related illness for each job.
The Heat Safe Plan builds on the results of the Risk Assessment allowing a Site Manager to set triggers and controls for pre-defined status levels. Meaning that when an event is predicted everyone knows what they need to do well in advance. No last minute scrambling!
As well as controls, the Heat Safe Plan shows a Monthly Risk Profile, Risk Score and Recommended Hydration for each job entered into the Heat Manager system which helps site managers manage water rations per worker when working off site.
